This magical and exciting "sport of the mind" will exercise your child's brain and build brain muscle and new cells. Instruction will include the basics and then move into tactics and strategy, opening theory, middle game planning and endgame combinations. There will also be time to plan and apply the lessons learned weekly. This exciting program teaches chess but also builds life skills. Life skills are developed such as problem solving, decision making, responsibility, analytical and critical thinking, focus and concentration and the like while learning and playing chess. Studies now confirm that the student that studies and plays chess does better academically. Indeed, this is an exciting and fun sport to learn and play for a lifetime. Our Chefs will reinforce kitchen skills associated with our weekly recipes and each area of cooking terminology, foods and fun nutrition facts (even a few bad jokes!.) We will practice measurements, use a wide array of cooking utensils, always preparing the freshest ingredients while cooking and more! Let's Build It - 212195

Your child must attend McKenzie School to register for this class.

The ball rolls down the ramp, turns the switch, that moves the post, that activates the zip-line, that knocks the ball down the ramp and into the goal! In this STEAM program, students will be building Rube Goldberg "Mouse Trap" chain-reaction machines featuring levers, pulleys, and other simple machines. Engineering and physics concepts will be introduced and reinforced through hands-on, innovative lessons and creative play time. Problem solving skills and teamwork will be put to the test as the complexity of the projects increases from week to week. On the final class, there will a building competition - How many contraptions can you connect in the chain reaction? No previous experience is necessary. Just a desire to learn and build. Each student will receive an award on the last day of the session, and have the opportunity to earn Energy Belts to demonstrate their learned skills!

Students will prepare, cook and enjoy hands-on cooking classes featuring good tasting and good for you recipes from Creative Kids Corner's "Food For Life" series. Each child will prepare, cook and enjoy a new dish each week that emphasizes fresh, seasonal ingredients and why these foods promote good health. Young chefs will learn culinary basics and terms, use a wide variety of culinary tools, and discover how easy and enjoyable cooking can be at any age! Students leave with pride, smiles and the day's recipe for their own cookbooks. Specific dietary concerns are incorporated besides following a nut-free curriculum. Exciting Electronics is an exhilarating, cutting-edge area of engineering. In this unit, students will design, build, and test various circuits and electronic projects. Instructors will guide students through core concepts of electrical engineering, introducing them to circuits and electrical components. Students will use hands-on projects and experiments to explore how electricity is part of our daily lives. No previous experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and build. Projects will include: various sound producing circuits, musical instruments, a simulated telephone, and even both their own radio...and radio station! Each student will receive an award on the last day of the session, as well as the opportunity to earn Energy Belts to demonstrate their learned skills!

Under the creative direction of Chicago Loves Dance, students will learn the fundamentals and basics of cheerleading learning cheers, formations, and poms/dance choreography over the session. The last day of the class will be a parent watch day where they will do a short performance to show off the set of cheers and poms routine they created.

Chess Enrichment - 312745

Your child must be enrolled in Harper School to register.

This magical and exciting “sport of the mind” will exercise your child’s brain and build brain muscle and new cells. Instruction will include the basics and then move into tactics and strategy, opening theory, middle game planning and endgame combinations. There will also be time to plan and apply the lessons learned weekly. This exciting program teaches chess but also builds life skills. Life skills are developed such as problem solving, decision making, responsibility, analytical and critical thinking, focus and concentration and the like while learning and playing chess. Studies now confirm that the student that studies and plays chess does better academically. Indeed, this is an exciting and fun sport to learn and play for a lifetime. Professional instruction will be provided by a U.S. Chess Federation certified instructor from Chess Enrichment a premier chess provider on the north shore. REGISTER TODAY.
